VIDALVERDE | AMES

Vidalverde

The Vidalverde House is located in Ames, in a low density residential area, dominated by small housing developments and single-family homes, a few kilometers from Santiago de Compostela.

The remarkable size of the plot and its favorable topography allowed the development of the house extensively on a single floor, without space limitations and looking for the best orientation for each room.

The broken geometry of the floor plan led to the development of a series of spaces that intertwine in a fluid manner. In this way, the landscaping project designed for the plot is introduced into the interior of the house.

The fragmentation of the main volume into several pieces reduces the scale of the house and helps it to integrate with the garden, generating different spaces. The selected floral and tree species are arranged to singularize each corner.

The solarium of the swimming pool was designed as the focal point of the house, for this reason the main rooms are arranged around it and embrace it, directing their gaze towards it.

The wide porches protect from the persistent rains in winter and act as brise-soleils in summer. Two openings break the continuity of the porches, one in the day area and the other in the night area. All the false ceilings are arranged at the same height, extending the rooms towards the exterior.

The careful selection of plant species, together with the careful cutting and treatment of the materials contribute to the perfect definition and qualification of the exterior spaces.

The house sits on a powerful masonry plinth that puts the house in contact with the ground and assumes the irregularities of the topography. The pieces of semi-dressed granite are matched with “a hueso” joint without mortar as is tradition in popular Galician architecture.

The masonry walls are broken up by large glazed openings that run from floor to ceiling. The profiles of the carpentry are left hidden, enhancing the feeling of continuity. The relationship between the interior and the exterior is total.

The interior space is made up of warm materials such as wood, present in the flooring, carpentry and furniture. The natural light that filters through the patios gives the rooms a life of their own.

The house blends completely with the vegetation of the garden. The flowering of the species and the cycles of the seasons are brought inside the house. The landscaping project contributes to generate a controlled natural background that provides the level of intimacy and privacy that every home needs.
