TERRA | CAMBADOS
The TERRA House is located in the stately town of Cambados. Its location on the edge of the historic centre gives it a unique character within a predominantly rural environment.
The geometry of the plot and its corner layout, on a secondary but busy street, had a decisive influence on the design of the house, which is organized through the introduction of a series of courtyards.
The perimeter wall, made of wild granite masonry, maintains its continuity curving slightly at the corner, providing the house with the necessary dose of privacy.
The upper volume of the house is supported by the exterior stone wall forming the courtyards to which the rooms open.
Due to the dimensions of the plot, the occupation of the space is high, generating a dynamic set of full and empty spaces.
The courtyards ensure adequate lighting and direct ventilation conditions in all rooms, generating, in addition, a series of paths around them.
This configuration not only maximizes space, but also establishes a balance between full and empty spaces.
The upper volume of the house emerges from the granite wall, evoking, in terms of texture and colour, the typical whitewashed surfaces of traditional architecture.
The elongated shape of the plot conditioned the interior organization of the house. The rooms were arranged perpendicular to the main guideline, facing one side or the other according to their function. The courtyards, on the other hand, were arranged in parallel, illuminating the circulation spaces laterally.
A fundamental aspect of the Terra House is the skilful use of natural light, which filters through the courtyards and the generous skylight of the staircase. This clarity floods the entire house and expands each of its spaces to the outside.
The views from the roof offer a privileged panoramic view to enjoy the sunsets over the Arousa estuary. A detail that underlines the connection of the house with the place.
A large studio, with independent access to the terrace, and a bedroom complete the program of the house on the upper floor.
Terra House is a model of how architecture can respond to site conditions, creating a home that harmonizes with its surroundings, while offering comfort, security and beauty.
