SEARAS | VILANOVA DE AROUSA

Searas

Casa Searas is located on a flat plot in a low-density residential area near Vilanova de Arousa. The absence of views or significant landscape constraints determined the strategy to be followed. Thus, the house closes itself off from its immediate surroundings and opens up to its own interior, creating its own landscape and way of living.

Access, one of the key elements of the project, responds to the everyday way of arriving at the house by car. The building is located in a central position on the plot and parallel to the access road. From the road, the house appears contained and protective, welcoming visitors under a large cobbled porch that organizes the arrival space.

This L-shaped gesture embraces those who enter and defines a clear boundary between the urban exterior and the domestic interior. The arm that welcomes visitors contrasts with the one that opens onto the garden. The former protects the privacy of the home from the outside world, while the latter establishes a more intimate relationship with the surroundings.

In terms of construction and choice of materials, the project aims to reinterpret traditional Galician architecture using contemporary language.

The stone plinth anchors the house to the ground, using strong masonry walls built with “bone joints” that extend beyond the house itself. The lightness of the roof contrasts with the solid base, creating a serene and balanced image. The vertical metal latticework completes the ensemble, filtering the light and ensuring visual continuity between spaces.

Inside, the house is organized in a clear and functional way. The intersection of the volumes houses the living room, the heart of domestic life and the hub of the rest of the rooms. From here, you can access the kitchen and the sleeping area, and a patio enriches the space, creating a warm, lively, and changing atmosphere.

The finishes and quality of the materials reinforce this atmosphere: wood covers the walls and floors in the bedrooms, providing comfort and contrast with the white ceilings and sand-colored floors in the other rooms. Artificial light accompanies and enhances the textures, completing a bright, welcoming, and balanced whole.

The landscaping blends naturally and organically into the project, breaking with the geometric order. The vegetation in the flowerbeds is strategically arranged to highlight the large sections of masonry and metal latticework. The choice of shrub species seeks to convey a natural feel by introducing a wide variety of colors and shapes.

In the rear area, where the main rooms open up, larger species are planted to provide shade, privacy, and a more natural feel to the whole, mitigating the presence of the adjacent buildings.

Casa Searas is, in short, a home that combines the solidity of permanence with the warmth of everyday life. Its architecture is restrained, precise, and essential, creating its own landscape and redefining the relationship between the home and its immediate surroundings.
