PARDIÑAS | VILAGARCÍA DE AROUSA

Pardiñas

Casa Pardiñas is situated on a lot between two adjacent buildings in a fishing neighborhood of Vilagarcía de Arousa. The house enjoys an excellent location facing the tree-lined avenue and the boardwalk. The project is built on the site of a former warehouse, whose main elevation was preserved, while the rear facade—which originally opened onto the sea—was completely rebuilt, thereby redefining its relationship with the urban environment.

The challenge was to accommodate all the living spaces within such a small area while creating a sense of openness and brightness. To achieve this, the spiral staircase became the true backbone of the project; rather than merely a functional element, it serves as a sculptural feature that organizes the interior layout, visually connecting the floors and defining the space.

A large skylight floods the entire space with natural light, from the attic to the ground floor, transforming the staircase into a dynamic feature that defines the rooms.

The home is spread over three levels. The garage is located on the ground floor; the living area is on the first floor; the sleeping area is on the second floor; and the attic level features a study and a living area that opens onto a spacious terrace offering spectacular views of the estuary and the boardwalk.

The facades are constructed using monolithic precast concrete elements. These elements define solid and void spaces and introduce a geometric order to the elevations. The concrete pilasters and imposts help to highlight the openings in the manner of the window surrounds found in traditional Galician architecture. Sun protection is provided by Venetian blinds that regulate light and ensure privacy in the interior rooms.

The choice of construction method made it possible to streamline the process, significantly reducing construction time and ensuring a high-quality result—a crucial factor in a project of this nature.

Inside, the home emphasizes light and visual continuity. The natural light that filters through the two facades is amplified by the central void created by the staircase. The finishes aim to bring balance and warmth to the space through the use of neutral tones and natural textures.

Casa Pardiñas overcomes the inherent limitations of a lot sandwiched between neighboring buildings to accommodate the needs of a modern family. It preserves the essence of traditional architecture while introducing a touch of modernity. The building’s construction system is left exposed, shaping its exterior appearance.
