FRANQUEIRA | ILLA DE AROUSA

FRANQUEIRA

The FRANQUEIRA house is located in a residential area of Illa de Arousa, in a quiet and low-density neighbourhood, where there is an abundance of single-family homes.

The considerable size of the plot allowed the development of an extensive ground-floor dwelling with its longitudinal front parallel to the road.

The layout of the building on the plot generated two clearly differentiated areas: the first has a more public character due to its proximity to the street; and the second, in contrast, has a more private character, acting as an interior garden.

The main rooms of the house, such as the living room, kitchen and bedrooms, were oriented towards the garden. On the other hand, the service and circulation spaces were oriented towards the street. For this reason, a series of courtyards were created to give them a sufficient degree of privacy.

On the outside, the walls of granite stand out, matched  with “a hueso” joint without mortar and finished with “natural cut”. The closing wall of the plot was also made in this way to give continuity to the facade solution.

The dichotomy between the front and back elevation is also evident in the type of openings. Towards the street, the house remains hermetic, hidden behind the granite panels and the lattices of the patios, but on the other hand, towards the interior, it opens completely, introducing the garden into the rooms.

The horizontality of the granite courses, as well as their rough and rugged texture, contrasts with the smooth and regular surface of the metal lattices, which are arranged following a vertical pattern in a table format.

The carpentry runs from floor to ceiling, allowing for total continuity between the interior and exterior. The pavement and the false ceiling extend into the garden, extending the space of the day area to the edge of the plot.

The same idea of contrast that underlies the exterior is also transferred to the interior. In the kitchen, the island countertop and sink contrast with the wood of the cupboards in color and texture.

The doors are integrated into the paneling, allowing the continuity of the false ceilings. The wood finishes take on a leading role, bringing a touch of color and warmth to the home.

In the bedrooms, the treatment of the headboards follows the same line as the rest of the woodwork, running from wall to wall. A vertical lattice of bars breaks with the homogeneity of the furniture, bringing vibration and texture to the whole.
